Wedding Plans: How We Found Our Wedding Photographer
We’re at that weird stage in our lives when we’re attending a wedding related event practically every other weekend and our social media feeds are filled with engagement announcements on the regular. It can be overwhelming, especially when you’re in the throws of your own wedding planning (or busy proclaiming your eternal singledom; which I appreciate). From vendors to menu to honeymoon plans, I’ve had a ton of questions about our wedding. I thought I’d start to share some of the details as our big day approaches – hopefully my tips and tricks will be useful or at the very least, satisfy your nosy self (no shame).
Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing my inspiration behind wedding favours, menu ideas, décor and flowers, and telling you exactly how we managed to plan the biggest party of our lives. And if you have specific questions, hit me up on Instagram, Facebook or shoot me an email HERE.
For our first dive into the wedding planning trenches, I’m talking all about how we found our photographer…
Tactically, we knew that we needed an idea of how many people would be attending; this would help narrow down our venue options. Once we drafted our guest list, we (I) started creating a list of local venues that had a homey, comfortable vibe that could also accommodate our desire for a cocktail style reception (we just aren’t fans of formal – more on that later).
We made a list of 10 or so venues to check out but the critical step during this process was hopping on Google and searching “venue name + wedding photography”. In my mind, it made sense to scope out other people’s wedding photos from venues we were considering because if it photographed like a pile of shit, we weren’t interest. (Tangent: the inevitable finality of life has made me hold photos in the highest regard; they’re a ticket back to a moment otherwise left in the past and there’s something special about that).
It was through this step that I had stumbled across Erin Blackwood (if you’re curious – this is the exact post that struck a chord with me.) Once I consulted the other party in this almost marriage (Hi, BH!), I contacted Erin IMMEDIATELY. Honestly, it was so quick - we hadn’t even booked our venue.
We set up a meeting with Erin and in the meantime scoped out a few of our venue options after we narrowed our list down to 4. We met Erin for coffee and after chatting with her, explaining our vibe and plans and checking out her samples, we were hooked. It was as if we had been lifelong friends, whose parents had been lifelong friends – what I mean to say is, we felt this level of comfort that generally is so rare to find when meeting a stranger. We left the meeting and I’m pretty sure I sent Erin a message on the way home to tell her how great she was and explain how desperately we needed her to shoot our wedding. We didn’t even contact another photographer, she’s THAT AWESOME.
The rest, as they say is history and because I need to share her incredible talent with you, here are some of our engagement photos for your viewing pleasure. I can’t friggin’ wait to see what she creates on the big day, but I know it’s going to be fabulous.
