Recipes to Celebrate Blueberry Month

This just in! July is National Blueberry Month. Don’t worry, up until 45 seconds ago (which is actually 2 months ago if you’re reading this now) when I was looking for topics to fill an empty spot in July, I didn’t know either.

Blueberries were always a bit of an odd fruit to me. They’re rather small and inconspicuous and always seemed to be an ingredient that was made for complementing other ingredients rather than standing alone as the star of a recipe.

To celebrate Blueberry Month, I’ve compiled some recipes to showcase this little antioxidant-filled fruit.

Blueberry Tart by Martha Stewart

It’s not a list of the best recipes if it doesn’t include Martha, I mean - really. This recipe is super simple to make and can be even easier if you buy a premade pie shell (though I’m not sure that Martha would approve). With blueberries the star of this dish, it’s a bit sweet and a bit tart with a hint of citrus. Wild blueberries from your local farmer’s market would elevate this tart to the next level.

Boozy Blueberry Floats by Foodie Crush

Just like this list would be nothing without Martha, it would be equally nothing without some booze. I LOVED root beer floats when I was a young whippersnapper so this marriage of ice cream and the berry of the month is enticing and calling my name. The recipe calls for Pearl Blueberry Vodka which I’ve never heard of but Smirnoff does carry a blueberry flavoured vodka so I’m sure that will do the trick. I see my patio and this beverage in my future.

Blueberry Mole with Chicken by Adventures in Cooking

When I think of blueberry recipes, my mind automatically gravitated towards desserts (or brie cheese but that’s a story for another day). When I came across this recipe, I was intrigued. Mole is a spicy Mexican sauce flavoured with chilis, broth and chocolate (yes, chocolate!) and this particular recipe also incorporates blueberries. It might sound a little out there but the sweet and spicy flavours will get you all the way to flavourtown.
