Loving Lately: Podcast Favourites
When I first started commuting to Kingston for work in the summer of 2017, I quickly found myself dreading having to listen to all my favourite songs on the radio and my Spotify playlists. Every single one reminded me of everything I was leaving in the rear view mirror each week and it made my trips across the 401 that much harder.
It was then that I stumbled across The Dear Sugars podcast and I was HOOKED. Podcasts were really starting to gain popularity at the time so I quickly started to add shows to my docket, and filled up most of my 4 hour (one-way) commute. One thing I really enjoy about podcasts is that there is something for EVERYONE. From business and entrepreneurship to true crime and advice columns, the genres of the podcast world span far and wide, as do the episode lengths.
Although it’s hard to narrow down, I think these are my favourite shows right now, I hope you check them out!
Dear Sugars with Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond
I first fell in love with the work of Cheryl Strayed several years ago when my friend Tamara recommended her book Tiny Beautiful Things. Dear Sugars is truly a compilation of the advice you didn’t know you needed and the range of topics from racism, sexuality and the messy bits of day-to-day life help listeners practice radical empathy for people from all walks of life.
Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard
Dax Shepard came on my radar after binge-watching Parenthood during my university years. Dax is laugh-out-loud funny and his star studded line up of celebrity guests as well as experts in various subject matter always make for an insightful and entertaining episode.
Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations (and Oprah’s Masterclass)
It’s Oprah. What more do you need to know?! Conversations about life, love, grace and faith with some of the most influential people on the planet… how can you go wrong? Some of my favourite episodes include Ellen DeGeneres, Maya Angelou, Dwayne Johnson, Tim McGraw, Tom Brady and Reba McEntire.
Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness
If you’re a fan of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot then you NEED to listen to Getting Curious. Personally, I find JVN to be the most hilarious and entertaining member of the Fab Five but who knew he was also incredibly insightful. I laugh, I cry. YAAAS hunny!
Modern Love by WBUR & The New York Times
Modern Love is a collection of true stories of love, loss and redemption (essays submitted to the NYT) read by actors. Not only are the essays infinitely prolific and heartfelt but the readings performed by celebrities such as Busy Phillips, John C. Reilly and Kristen Bell to name a few, give listeners all kinds of feels.
And that’s what’s up with podcasts lately. Have you listened to any of these? Do you have a favourite that you think I should check out? Leave me a comment below!
