How We Found Our New House
A couple of weeks ago we moved into our new house. Truthfully, finally getting those keys was an immense relief. The process of finding and buying a home while also staging and selling our home was tedious and draining, to say the least. We’ve had so many questions over the last little while so I thought I’d take a moment and share the process for all you curious cats.
We bought our townhouse in February of 2015 and waited 2 years for it to be built. We finally moved in during February of 2017 and over the course of that year, experienced so many firsts. Our first party, our first Meatballs, we brought our pup home and got engaged. We knew that this house was our start and it was never our intention to live out the rest of our days there. But real estate markets are tricky and it was a chance to have a place of our own while earning some equity in the process.
This past Spring, we contacted a high school friend who just so happened to be a Realtor and got some advice on selling and buying. For us, it was going to be a bit tricky. We were looking for a rural property with some acreage and the options within our budget we’re limited at best. We decided that the best course of action would be to find something we LOVED, make an offer and buy it before selling our townhouse. Crazy, I know! There were a lot of concerns, like - what would we do if we couldn’t sell our house as quickly as we wanted or if we didn’t make the money from our sale that was required for a stress-free purchase. But we trusted our Realtor and hoped that the hot market would be the perfect condition for our sale.
Enter the MAJOR roadblock… I work out of town. Specifically, I work over 3 hours away from home and I live in a different city through the week, only coming home on weekends. We would find houses we liked but they would be sold by the time I got home to see them. We started to get discouraged. So we put it on the back burner. After all, we had enough on our plate with a wedding to plan and tackling my long distance lifestyle. Brandon would check Realtor.ca occassionaly but we weren’t finding anything that caught our eye. We we’re about ready to call it quits until I was home for good and we got our minds wrapped around the wedding.
And then, by some twist of fate, we found it. Simply stumbled across a listing online. The house was perfect! In a small town setting, enough land that you don’t have actual neighbours, close enough to a grocery store but far enough away from the rat race of rush hour traffic. And backing onto a forest that even Snow White would be jealous of. So we contacted our Realtor, got a showing a few days later and less than one week after the house was listed (with some paperwork and money talk), it was ours!
It was the most kismet of situations and the best example of things working out when you least expect it!
